Log In Tips

Below are the most common questions asked about logging into Scrawl. If any of them apply to you, please consult the related list of tips we've provided. If after trying our suggestions you continue to have problems, or you have other questions not answered here, please email us at: support@stwa.net, and we will do our best to assist you.

Problem: Whenever I try logging in to Scrawl, I immediately get bounced back to the login page. What am I doing wrong?

Solution: Whenever you log in to Scrawl, an automatic page refresh takes place in order to properly update the "Logged in as..." message. If you're getting bounced out at this point, normally the problem is a corrupted browser cache file (cache being the web page info your browser stores or "caches" on your hard drive to speed up the download of pages). This can cause the system not to recognize that you have logged in, even though, in fact, you have. If this happens to you, simply hit your browser's "Refresh" button as soon as you're bounced back to the login page. You may have to do this two or three times, but it should clear up the problem. If this doesn't work, you may have to manually clear the cache. We have instructions on how to do this in either Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator here.

Please note:
Some ISPs (Prodigy being the only one we've confirmed thus far) provide their users with an indirect route to the Internet, filtering all traffic through a gateway server first. In rare instances, this can cause problems with our security system, and may make it difficult, if not impossible, to log in to our site. If for any reason you suspect that this may be your problem, please contact us at support@stwa.net and we will do our best to assist you.

Problem: I received a "Cookies Not Enabled" message when I tried logging in. What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Solution: Cookies are simple text files used by various websites. These files are stored on your hard drive and allow the browser to keep track of your personal settings, "logged in" status, etc. In order to access Scrawl, your browser must be able to use cookies. While this feature is generally turned on by default in most browsers, it is possible to turn them off. If you suspect that this is the case, or you think there is another problem causing you to receive the above message, then try the various methods listed here to correct the problem. It should be noted that if you are on a network computer, such as at a university, or at work, it is possible that they have the system configured not to accept cookies for security reasons. If you suspect this to be the case, feel free to email us at support@stwa.net and we will do our best to assist you, however it may be impossible for you to access our site from your location unless you can get help from the network administrator of your establishment. If at all possible, try accessing the site from your home or a friend's computer to determine for sure that the problem is specific to your work or school environment.

Please note:
Some people worry about cookies, fearing that they may collect personal information about the user's web surfing habits and such. Rest assured that Scrawl's cookies are used solely for purposes of site access and nothing more.

Problem: I just wanted to quickly check my Private Messages, so instead of logging in through the main forum page, I logged directly into my Private Messages inbox. As soon as I tried to click on a link, I got bounced back to the login page. Why?

Solution: Although logging in through other pages is technically possible, our forums were set up to best be logged in to via the main index page. However, if you do wish to log in through a page other than the main index page and experience the above problem, hitting your browser's "Refresh" button once or twice as soon as you're bounced back to the login page should clear up the problem. But if you continue to have problems staying logged in, please try the suggestions listed above. As always, if these fail, you may contact us at support@stwa.net and we will do our best to assist you.

Problem: I can't log in using my AOL browser. Every time I try, it just keeps sending me back to the login screen. What's going on?

Solution: I'm afraid that AOL can't handle certain security systems, particular those like ours. Whenever you move from one screen to another in our site, AOL assigns a new URL address to you each time, which causes our system to consider you as a new user who has yet to log in. Therefore, with each jump from page to page, it presents you with a new screen. There is no technical fix from our end at this time, but all you have to do is instead of using AOL's built-in browser, use an external browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator to access the site. Simply doing this should work, but if you continue to have problems, contact us at support@stwa.net and we will assist you as soon as we can.
